Use an image editor like gimp to figure out the size of your image and the center and radius of the circle. The circle must be completely within the image.

Got the problem with mplayer going out of sync after some time too, nevertheless, the opening of a new window each time you switch a channel can be avoided by using the "--fixed-vo" option (at least with -vc mpeg12, don't know about standard ffmpeg).

Yes, a little late for a comment, but I just stumbled upon this entry. :)

Ha old greek signs...

Those signs are used in maths... it appears to me that you don't understand the method provided here which is probably why it isn't working. Replacing the symbols with any others will still work, but it's nice to acknowledge how to do it the proper way.

Preprocessing is not required for what you want to achieve. The same can be done with LaTeX commands using the ifthen package and command line parameters.
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/LaTeX/Customizing_LaTeX#Command-line_LaTeX
To set a default behavior when called without a command line parameter, use \providecommand.

Sorry, the comment form borked my code. Should be

%<*DRAFT>
draft mode stuff
%</DRAFT>
%<*DRAFT|HANDOUT>
This will go in the draft or the handout
%</DRAFT|HANDOUT>

Also, the correct spelling is docstrip and it's found here: http://www.tug.org/texlive/Contents/live/texmf-dist/doc/latex/base/docstrip.pdf

I use doctstrip for this. You write a .dtx file marked up with tags like

%
draft mode stuff
%
%
This will go in the draft or the handout
%

Then you create a docstrip batch file which parses the .dtx file and splits out the individual tex files (they get separate names, which is a good feature). You can heave put this batch file in the head of the .dtx file so that LaTeX-ing the dtx file produces no DVI/PDF output but does produce the processed derivative files. Then you just process whichever one you're interested in.

If you use an IDE for writing in TeX this might add a click to your edit-preview-reedit cycle. But it's worth it because now the whole show's in one file and is portable.

I've been using this workflow for years and always thought I should blog about it.

Remember that this is just a texture for a hemisphere. Mirror the tennisball texture once and append it to the right of the texture of the hemisphere to get a texture for the full sphere. Sorry for the greek variables but that is probably as easy as it gets.
